Toyota pulls Cydia theme and ads to appease Apple

Apple asks Toyota to remove jailbreak Cydia theme
In news that will no doubt shake the very bedrock of your belief system, Apple has asked Toyota to remove its Scion theme and its advertising from ModMyi, a Cydia repository. The Scion theme has been available for weeks, but after it received a ton of press in the last couple of days, Apple finally lashed out.

It's not like we should be surprised, considering Apple has claimed in the past that jailbreaking is illegal -- but at the same time, did the Cupertino cronies hear about the ruling that made circumventing DRM, and thus jailbreaking, legal? Anyway, whether Toyota was supporting illegal, legal, or deliciously gray and ambiguous, activity, it doesn't matter: Apple asked Toyota to remove the theme, and Toyota graciously bent over and capitulated.

This story raises a much more interesting topic, though: this is the first time a multinational company has publicly acknowledged and embraced the jailbreak community. Considering jailbreaking is technically legal, and Cydia's creator, Jay Freeman, estimates that up to 9% of OS devices are jailbroken, it simply makes good, commercial sense to target jailbreakers with ads. Toyota was simply trying to make some money, for shame!

As long as Apple continues to throw around its increasingly-expansive mass, the legality of jailbreaking will continue to be inconsequential. It will be interesting to see if another big company dares embrace the jailbreak community after this, too.

Android App Review: MobiReader Pro by DIOTEK Co

 MobiReader Pro

While business cards may be slowly getting phased out due to people switching to electronic forms of spreading contact information, I don't know a single person that doesn't have a stack of them sitting around from various people and businesses. The problem though, is what to do with them once you get them. Who has time to sit down and manually enter them into their address book? I know I don't. MobiReader Pro is an app developed to help conquer that issue, as well as scan documents and create PDFs on the go.

This app is really easy to use. Simply choose Scan Business Card from the options carousel and snap a picture of the business card. MobiReader Pro scans the card, extracting the contact's name, area of business, company name, phone number email address, and postal address. You can choose to save this info in your phone's contacts, or just inside the app in the Business Card Holder. From within the application you can call the contact, view the business card image, and edit the details that were extracted. Another cool feature to the business card scanner is the inclusion of augmented reality. Choose this option and and you can see the location of the business based on the addresses of your scanned cards.

The second part of MobiReader Pro is the document scanner. Working much like the business card scanner, you choose this option and snap a picture of the document. Not only can you edit the text from the scan, you can save the document to a folder, convert into PDF, and upload to Google Docs. You can even translate the document into 54 different languages! And if you don't need the entire page, you can crop it down to a section, and use any of the above options on just that part.

The final option in MobiReader Pro is the Image to PDF converter. Quite handy when on the go, you can convert an image from your gallery, Business Card Holder, Document folder, or take a picture to convert. The finished PDF can be emailed, uploaded to Google Docs, or saved in the Document Folder.

I did some test scans of both business cards and documents with MobiReader Pro, and I was pretty pleased with the results. While most of the information was accurate, there was always some editing to be done. Still, even with editing, the app makes it much faster to get that information into your phone than entering it all manually. So if you're looking for an alternative to spending an afternoon going through that stack of business cards, or find yourself needing a quick way to scan documents on the go, check out MobiReader Pro. You can grab it on sale now for $3.99, regularly $12.99 in the Android Market.

Download links and more screenshots are after the break.

Samsung Adds Another Channel to the Mobile Conversation Mix

Samsung Electronics is launching a free mobile communications service called "ChatON." It works on several smartphone and feature phone platforms -- but apparently not Windows Phone -- and offers a Web client for tablets, desktop and notebook computers as well.
The service will let users text each other, chat in groups, share video, or create and share hand-scribbled notes on smartphones.

Microsoft releases sexy Bing app for iPad

It's still a bit odd seeing Microsoft deliver apps for Apple's mobile platform. And it's even stranger still to see one as sexy as the new Bing app for iPad, which brings a slick, immersive search experience to Apple's tablet.

Just as a regular search on bing.com will, the Bing app for iPad tailors the results it displays based on what you're searching for. There are loads of custom views, covering everything from movies and maps to weather and shopping. The app also offers a heads-up display of currently trending searches, complete with related images, which is an iPad-exclusive feature.

Navigation is a breeze thanks to multitouch controls, allowing users to flick or swipe through results. And while the development team refers to the app as "touch and decide," Bing Voice Search is also built in -- making it easy to start a query without using the iPad's on-screen keyboard.

The Bing app for iPad is available for download now from the App Store.

iPhone App Downloads Drop In July, Incentivized Install Crackdown To Blame (Thank?)

fiksuMarketing technology company Fiksu has released new data that shows a downward trend in mobile application installations on iPhone. The increase, in broad terms, is marginal, given the size of the iPhone's user base, but any non-upward movement is curious. Says Fiksu, there was a drop from 4.505 million iPhone app installs per day in June to 4.25 million app installations per day in July.

Nissan Leaf mod offers more accurate battery status, less streamlined interior

Car mods come in many forms -- including, even, a piece of cardboard with some switches and an LED display. The car being modded in this case is the Nissan Leaf, and the mod in question (still in its temporary form here, thankfully) is a simple but important one. It's a homebrew device that plugs into the Leaf's OBD-II diagnostics port and displays the battery's exact state of charge, as opposed to the somewhat less specific bars that are displayed on the main dashboard display. Absolutely necessary? Not exactly, but the mod seems to be catching on with a growing contingent of DIY-minded Leaf forum members. Hit the source link below for a few more examples and some additional details for building your own.

Zoho Docs 2.0 adds iPad support

zoho docs ipad
Zoho has offered an iOS app for a while now -- at least for the iPhone and iPod touch. Those of you who have been wanting to use the Zoho app on your iPad were out of luck, but that's no longer the case.

Zoho Docs 2.0 has landed in the App Store, and the most notable change is that it's now a universal app. Now you're able to take advantage of the app's mobile productivity powers on your larger iOS device. Retina display support has also been added, as have document sharing options -- which you can utilize in both the viewer and collaboration modes.

Just like the basic Zoho service, the app is available totally free of charge. Paid subscriptions get you additional storage space and start at $3 per month for professional use.

Chrome 11 beta adds new experimental APIs for proxies, Web navigation

google chrome 11 proxy
Google Chrome 11 -- which just recently made the move to the browser's beta channel -- has received a minor update that gives developers access to two new APIs.

The first is a full-featured proxy API, which will, for example, allow users to set different proxy servers for normal browsing and Incognito mode. Proxy auto-config scripts are also supported by the API.

The second -- Web Navigation Extension -- is a bit more expansive. This API will allow devs to build everything from more powerful safe browsing extensions -- like Traffic Light -- to data analysis and reporting extensions.

Both APIs are currently experimental, so you'll need to enable them on the about:flags page to try out any relevant extensions. Apart from a proxy example built by Google and shipped with the Chromium source, we're not aware of any examples just yet, however. We'll let you know when we spot any slick, new extensions which do surface.

The Next New Cyberdefense Strategy: Monitor Everything

The definition of "cybercrime" is ever changing, as is the severity of attacks. 2011 has already been labeled the "year of the data breach," and yet many of the breaches are not the typical SQL injection attacks or database hacks. Instead, criminals are using legitimate website functions to steal data and sometimes money, from targeted organizations.

A Photographer Thinks He Can Solve the Mystery of the Lost Leonardo da Vinci Painting with a Picture [Art]

"The Battle of Anghiari" is a Leonardo da Vinci painting that many in his era called the Renaissance Man's finest work. The problem is that it's been lost since the 1500's.
